The Perfect Stone

"Everyone says love hurts, but that isn't true. Loneliness hurts. Rejection hurts. Losing someone hurts. Envy hurts. Everyone gets these things confused with love, but in reality love is the only thing in this world that covers up all pain and makes someone feel wonderful again. Love is the only thing in this world that does not hurt."

I saw you there,
but I passed you by.

Oh, I noticed,
your uniqueness,
your beauty,
your inner strength.

But I passed you by,
thinking where you were was best,
as I moved on to search for other stones.

And stones I searched,
held them,
turned them over,
admired them,
and loved them for a time.

Ten million to one,
a hundred million to one.
The odds I'd stumble upon you again,
as if the universe needed me to take another look.

Connected by one day,
and chance meetings,
and a feeling no one thought to share.

You couldn't.
I didn't.
Those that knew didn't.

And so I searched,
found, and tossed away.
And there you were.

Just as beautiful,
and smooth,
and strong,
yet more embedded.

Perhaps it's best I leave you there again.
Perhaps the perfect stone was there from the beginning,
and the searching in vain.

I saw you there,
but I passed you by.
